I attended a yin yoga class last night and it was very spiritual. It was very intimate with 2 others including the instructor. Before we started the yoga session, we were asked to chant OM three times. This was the first time I’ve encountered this in a class. As we chanted together, I realized how calming it felt. It quieted my busy mind, and I felt relaxed. Relaxed! Being a mother of 3 and a full time worker, relaxing is something I can rarely do. I can try to sit and relax, but my mind will continue to go. Not this time! Chanting OM with two others proved to be quite powerful.
Maybe the power of chanting can release your worries and carry you somewhere peaceful, even just for a little bit.
This takes me back to a memory of my father’s funeral. This was such a hard time for me…and the day of the funeral I remember the monks sitting in one corner of the room – to the left my of father’s casket. They began their chants. I couldn’t help but remember how it relaxed me. I closed my eyes and let the sound travel through my body. Maybe I was super exhausted from crying and trying to hold it together, but their chanting made me feel a sense of peace. It was beautiful. I felt like I was floating. Again – possibly because I was super exhausted but who knows Maybe the power of chanting can release your worries and carry you somewhere peaceful, even just for a little bit.
I felt this same relaxed feeling as I chanted OM with my instructor and fellow yogi. It then dawned on me that it works to quiet my busy mind. All I could hear was OM. All I felt was calmness.
So maybe you can try it. When you’re feeling a bit crazy and everything just becomes a little unbearable, find a quiet and private spot for yourself. Sit down, close your eyes and say OM. Let the sound vibrate through your body and let it calm you.
